as a designer most of my life is spent researching images, extracting storytelling from people in photographs and paintings. This specific image was a random post on Instagram. There was no additional information, I knew right away that the girl was from a northern plains tribe, due to her elk tooth dress. As natives sometimes we have “aesthetic signifiers“ that are recognizable to other tribes. I love the humor, the playfulness of this photo. Images like this feel like a powerful defiance of how one is portrayed by history.
